Rylands Genizah Workshop III: Manuscripts as Artefacts – The Evidence of the Genizah

10 09 2009

As part of the AHRC Project, we organise regular workshops to which we invite a number of Genizah specialists with an eye on enhancing the database and in the hope of new identifications. The last workshop was held on 22nd – 23rd June 2009 at the John Rylands Library, Deansgate. The workshop explored questions of codicology and literacy using evidence from the Rylands Genizah Collection. Professor Philip Alexander and Dr. Renate Smithuis introduced the workshop with a paper entitled Manuscripts as Artefacts, we also gratefully recieved papers from a range of international Genizah specialists: Professor Eleazar Gutwirth, Dr. Edna Engel, Dr. Ben Outhwaite, Dr. Ortal Paz-Saar, Dr. Javier Castano. Other participants included Professor Judith Olszowy-Schlanger, Dr. Ronnie Vollandt, Maria Haralambakis, Katharina Keim and Penelope Junkermann.
